Scheduled functions run on a set schedule instead of being triggered by some pre-determined action (who would have guessed?!). Sometimes you need to run certain actions in the system that cannot depend on being triggered by a certain action. Need to run a certain update every day at the end of the workday? Use a scheduled function.
